National History

Kappa Delta Pi was created in 1911 at the University of Illinois. The Greek words were chosen to represent knowledge, duty and power to show the excellence of all of its members. Originally the society was a national organization including laureate members such as George Washington Carver, Eleanor Roosevelt and Albert Einstein. In 1981 however, the society became International when a chapter at the University of Calgary was founded. Kelley, the first president of Kappa Delta Pi, was credited in creating the emblem. He says that "in order to be a good teacher, one must work like a bee, working tirelessly for the 'common weal'", which is why a bee is included in the emblem. Kappa Delta Pi still strives to promote excellence and advance leadership, scholarship and service.
